Experience first occurs on the cellular level. The nervous system is the recording system of the body. It records our experiences and organizes them into patterns. It can then recall the experience and modify it by integrating it with patterns of other systems and previous experiences. The nervous system is the last to know, but, once knowing, it becomes a major control center of psychophysical processes. It can initiate the learning of new experience through creativity and play. The nervous system underlies alertness, thought, and precision of coordination and establishes the perceptual base from which we view and interact with our internal and external worlds.

The endocrine glands are the major chemical governing system of the body and are closely aligned with the nervous system. Their secretions pass directly into the blood stream and their balance or imbalance influences all of the cells in the body. The glands are the keystone between the organs and the nervous system and between the nervous system and the fluids. They create crystalline psychophysical states through which we are able to experience and understand the universal aspect of self. This is the system of internal stillness, surges or explosions of chaos/balance and the crystallization of energy into archetypal experiences. The endocrine glands underlie intuition and the perceiving and understanding of the Universal Mind.

This is a 3.5 day Workshop for Intermediate and Advanced dancers in Contact Improvisation, for movers who are interested in exploring physical communication within tactile relations on spatial and flesh-based levels. The fabric of touch is key to our relational practices in the movement of Contact Improvisation – and for many of us, in the living of life itself. Steeped in somatic communication, this adventure into our movement life begins within ourselves, but moves outwardly, to where selfhood refuses to be stable, set and limiting. Working from a baseline of care, we will explore the almost magical potentials of moving together within time practices that coordinate our unspoken agreements. These alignments can happen faster than conscious decision making. We will learn to hold ourselves “lightly”, move readily, fly and support one another by becoming more than a singular being. Always more than one, we will play within highly creative physical forms that require our fullest being of presence. Expect to gain an experiential vocabulary that informs many states of your embodied relations.

The ISSC seeks to develop Relational Intelligence and other transferable skills of Somatic Communication in dancers, affiliate researchers, and everyday humans. This Training Workshop is meant to instill skills for research within Somatic Communication and Improvisational Ensemble Practice, in the method established by the ISSC. Outcomes will include a deeper understanding of the potentials for Co-Creative Practices where new knowledge and data might emerge, as well as access to establishing CoLab research groups under the resource umbrella of the ISSC.
