Movement Invitations that Sidestep Translation
Facilitated By: Lauren Mark
Fridays
5:00 - 6:30 PM
May 1st, 8th, 15th
What are the images or physical properties that guide how we move? In this class series, we will begin each class with a combination of guided improvisation and specific movement explorations using some of the metaphors of Gaga movement language and circular and spiraling patterns practiced in qigong and contemporary dance. The second half of class will be dedicated to experimenting with creating entryways into our unique and preferred styles of movement through the practice of scoring.
The culmination of each class will center its exploration around the questions: How can we convey the feeling of our movement not through prescriptions but through invitations, such as an initiation pattern or a suggested orientation to our surroundings? And how might prompts for others’ movement scores spark new discoveries in our own bodies? In short, how can we become more together?
Schedule:
Series (3 classes):
May 1
May 8

5:00pm – 6:30pm
Who is this for?
This class series is for “dancers” and “movers” who are comfortable with improvising, familiar with floorwork, and willing to move into their backspace. Having one or two years of dance or movement practice experience is helpful but not required.
It is also for movers who are open and willing to try on others’ movements styles and give some direction about their own.
“We become ONE with another – flowing together. Watching the improv of my partner was an intimate experience.”
– Kate, (improvisation workshop participant)
“Lauren’s activities allowed me to focus on FEELING and less on analysis, just flow with partner energy. Not fight…respond.”
– Matthew, (workshop participant, Taiqi and contact improvisation workshop to facilitate intercultural relating)
“I really connected through the sheer JOY of moving together. Being seen without words was powerful.”
– Margaux, (workshop participant, Taiqi and contact improvisation workshop to facilitate intercultural relating)

As a critical intercultural communication scholar and dancer, Lauren frequently thinks about how embodied rhythms permeate our social lives across cultures and contexts, and how we can awaken a deeper awareness of our social environments from our embodied awareness as dancers. She has developed lesson plans, published research, and shared ideas through invited talks to bring somatic awareness to the larger public. Her work about this subject can be found in the journals: Communication Teacher; Capacious: Journal for emerging affect inquiry, and Teaching in Higher Education, and on the online websites: Canada’s National Academy of Dance Education and Conference on Movement and Computing (MOCO) 19 Provocations.
